TOEFL iBT · Section 1 of 4 · Reading · 2026 format

The TOEFL iBT Reading section.
Read accurately, then justify your answer.

TOEFL iBT Reading tests your understanding of written English through three tasks: completing words, reading everyday texts, and understanding an academic passage. The section is adaptive in two stages and scored from 1 to 6. The strategy and worked exercises below are Upsilar learning materials.

What does TOEFL iBT Reading test?

ETS tests your understanding of written English used in campus life and academic study: main ideas, details, implied ideas, and vocabulary in context. Specialized knowledge of the subject is not required. The TOEFL iBT Reading Section (ETS)  (opens in a new tab)

In practice, look for what makes one option necessary and the others wrong. Recognizing a word from the passage is not enough: the answer must match the topic, scope, and conditions in the sentence.

In the score

Reading receives its own score from 1 to 6, in half-point increments. The overall score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half point; a result on these learning exercises does not predict your official score. Understanding your scores (ETS)  (opens in a new tab)

Which exercises have made up Reading since 2026?

  • Type 1

    Complete the Words

Complete partially erased words in a short text.

  • Type 2

    Read in Daily Life

Read a message, announcement, or other everyday text.

  • Type 3

    Read an Academic Passage

Understand an academic passage, its ideas, details, and key words.

The three names and their functions come from ETS’s current Reading page. The TOEFL iBT Reading Section (ETS)  (opens in a new tab)

Reading is adaptive in two stages under the 2026 specifications. Do not try to guess your score based on how difficult the test feels; focus on the information the question asks for. Test plan and specifications, 2026 update (PDF) (ETS)  (opens in a new tab)

How do you solve the three task types?

Three Upsilar learning exercises. The first multiple-choice item explains how to reason about an incomplete word; on the test, you complete the word rather than choose from these options.

Complete the Words · Context workshop Written by Upsilar

Short text

The campus seed library accepts packets from student gardens. Each packet must include the plant name and the harv___ date, so other gardeners know how old the seeds are.

Which complete word fits harv___?

Choose an answer.

The solution, step by step

Correct answer: A — harvest.

The method in action

  1. The context calls for a date that indicates the age of the seeds: the harvest date.
  2. The group harvest date fits. Three letters are missing after “harv”: harvesting is too long. The visible letters rule out harmless and hardware.

Key takeaways

Make sure the visible letters, the meaning of the passage and the grammatical function all agree.

Campus notice

Printmaking studio: The ventilation inspection has been moved from Wednesday morning to Thursday afternoon. Students may use the presses on Wednesday as usual. On Thursday, the studio will close after the morning class; collecting finished work from the corridor shelves will still be possible.

What can students do on Thursday afternoon?

Choose an answer.

The solution, step by step

Correct answer: B.

The method in action

  1. The studio closure concerns use of the room, but the passage leaves one specific option open: picking up work in the hallway.
  2. A contradicts the closure; C adds an extra class not mentioned; D assigns students an inspection they are not responsible for.

The pitfall

Carrying over to Thursday something that is allowed on Wednesday.

Key takeaways

Match each permission to the right day and for the bon lieu.

Read an Academic Passage · Inference Written by Upsilar

Academic passage

Researchers studying urban ponds compared sites shaded by trees with sites exposed to sunlight. The shaded ponds contained fewer algae, but the researchers did not conclude that shade alone explained the difference. Tree cover also reduced the amount of fertilizer carried into the ponds from nearby lawns. A second study therefore used screens that created shade without changing runoff.

Why did the second study use screens?

Choose an answer.

The solution, step by step

Correct answer: A.

The method in action

  1. The first observation combines two changes: less light and less fertilizer. It cannot isolate the cause.
  2. The screens vary the shade while keeping runoff unchanged: A restates this experimental role. B, C, and D add goals that the passage does not mention.

Key takeaways

A valid inference connects information in the passage; it does not turn a possibility into a certainty.

What strategy should you use for Reading?

This Upsilar strategy organizes your reading; it is not an ETS scoring rule.

  1. Identify what is being asked.

Are you looking for a word, a detail, the purpose of a message, or the role of a sentence? Read the prompt to know what evidence you need.

  2. Connect information to its context.

For an incomplete word, also use the surrounding sentences. For a message, connect people, dates, and restrictions. For an academic passage, follow the main idea and then the role of the example.

  3. Eliminate choices for a specific reason.

Classify choices as contradictions, unsupported information, overgeneralizations, or reversed relationships. An option can be plausible in the real world but still fail to answer the question about this passage.

The pitfall to avoid

Choose the sentence that contains the most words from the passage. A distractor can reuse the exact vocabulary while reversing a cause, a condition or the author of a statement.

How should you manage your time without setting a fixed limit per question?

Time and the number of questions may vary. Do not turn an average based on the baseline table into a fixed pacing rule. Get familiar with the pace using official materials for the current format. Test content, sections, and task types (ETS)  (opens in a new tab)

Three things to notice during a practice session
  1. I reread everythingName the missing information before rereading; return to the relevant section instead of always starting over.
  2. I’m missing a wordDistinguish a word that blocks your understanding of the relationship from a minor word. Then check its contextual meaning in the explanation.
  3. I’m stuck between two optionsCompare certainty and scope: all, some, only, still. A restriction often matters more than a synonym.

Keep your original answer, the evidence you missed, and one action for your next session. The log should change how you read, not just store vocabulary. TOEFL iBT error log: what to record and how to improve

Which resources should you choose to improve in Reading?

If the incomplete word holds you up, work on the letters, word families and syntax in the first workshop. Complete the Words on the TOEFL iBT: method and worked exercise

If you miss conditions in a message, practice with announcements and practical information. Read in Daily Life on the TOEFL iBT: method and exercises with worked solutions

TOEFL Reading FAQs

Do you need to know the passage’s scientific topic?

No. ETS says no prior knowledge of the topic is needed; your reasoning should be based on the passage provided.

Are older reading exercises still useful?

They may help you practice English, but check the task types. Preparation for the current format should include Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage.

Why not show a fixed number of questions and minutes?

ETS says the number of items and timing may vary. This guide does not treat the baseline table as a guarantee for every test taker.

What is the difference between a vocabulary error and an inference error?

In the first, an unfamiliar word blocks comprehension; in the second, you understand the words but draw a conclusion beyond what the passage supports. Each calls for different practice.
