The sentence determines the pair
ETS’s Sentence Equivalence presents a sentence with one blank and six choices. Select two answers; there is no partial credit. This format calls for two separate checks. First, each word must fit the context. Then the two completed sentences must express the same idea.
During practice, separate these checks in your notes. Write a short prediction, then classify each option as compatible, contradictory, or unsupported. Compare only the compatible options. Two words that are close in a dictionary may both be wrong here; two words with different uses may express the same nuance in this specific context.
Exercise 1: identify an attitude
The first clause gives a specific reason for the person’s attitude. Your answer must preserve this cause-and-effect relationship.
Because the pilot study included only a handful of participants, the researcher was _____ about extending its conclusions to the entire population.
Select all correct answers.
The solution, step by step
A and D — cautious / circumspect.
The method in action
- A very small sample calls for caution about generalizing. Cautious and circumspect express the same guarded attitude.
- B, jubilant, and E, elated, are indeed similar in meaning, but they express unjustified joy. C, certain, removes the caution. F, indifferent, expresses a lack of interest, not methodological prudence.
Exercise 2: resist the obvious pair
It can be tempting to match the most familiar options first. Do the opposite: identify the quality described by the sentence. An obvious pair is still a distractor if it does not express the right quality.
The editor removed every redundant sentence, leaving an introduction so _____ that it conveyed the entire argument in a few lines.
Select all correct answers.
The solution, step by step
B and E — concise / succinct.
The method in action
- The removal of redundant sentences and the few remaining lines indicate effective brevity: concise and succinct.
- A, ornate, and D, elaborate, might suggest an elaborate style but not the concision required. C, ambiguous, concerns uncertainty of meaning; F, inaccurate, concerns accuracy. Nothing in the sentence supports these flaws.
Exercise 3: preserve the strength of the claim
Meaning is not limited to positive or negative direction. Also compare intensity and scope. Someone who questions an idea does not necessarily reject it outright. The explanation after the blank often helps clarify this nuance.
Far from being _____, the committee’s decision remained open to revision as new evidence became available.
Select all correct answers.
The solution, step by step
C and F — final / irrevocable.
The method in action
- Far from reverses the idea in the blank. Open to revision means changeable; final and irrevocable describe what the decision is not.
- A, provisional, and E, tentative, form a plausible pair on their own, but Far from would make them incompatible with the possibility of revision. B, unanimous, concerns agreement among members. D, popular, concerns how the decision is received. Neither dimension is given.
The pitfall
The pitfall to avoid
Stopping as soon as you find a pair of synonyms is a mistake. Each of the three exercises deliberately includes two lexical pairs. Only one fits the text’s logic. Looking for synonyms without considering the sentence does not solve the problem.
Review your reasoning, not just your vocabulary
For each review, write out both complete sentences. Explain their shared meaning in French, then state how the rejected pair would change that meaning. This step reveals words whose translation you knew but whose nuance you did not. You can then create another context in which the rejected pair would fit.
If only one option seems convincing, do not force a second answer based on similar sounds. Revisit your prediction: it may be too narrow, too strong, or focused on a detail. The goal is a stable reading of the sentence that is precise enough to eliminate options and flexible enough to revise when they contradict it.
Key takeaways
- Use context to filter words before looking for a pair.
- Both similar answers must preserve the passage’s nuance.
- Explain why you rejected the other four options during review.
