What should you note before comparing two books?
Note the full title, publisher, edition number, ISBN, and print or digital format. Then find a contents page and sample that match that exact reference. A product listing may combine several versions; a review of an older edition may not describe the one you will receive.
The date alone is not decisive. ETS’s Practice Test 1 has a 2025 copyright but says it aligns with tests as of January 21, 2026. Look for an explicit statement about the format covered and confirm it against the tasks. A recent cover without a preview leaves that question unanswered.
Which task names should you look for in the contents or sample?
The table lists the tasks on ETS’s current page. The last column is our checklist for reviewing a book. A book focused on one skill does not need to cover everything; its scope just needs to be clear. For a book advertised as complete, check every row.
| Section | Tasks to look for | What we recommend checking |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Complete the Words ; Read in Daily Life ; Read an Academic Passage. | Incomplete words, everyday messages, and academic passages with explanations. |
| Listening | Listen and Choose a Response ; Listen to a Conversation ; Listen to an Announcement ; Listen to an Academic Talk. | Audio and questions covering the different task types. |
| Writing | Build a Sentence ; Write an Email ; Write for an Academic Discussion. | Sentence-structure explanations and explained sample responses. |
| Speaking | Listen and Repeat ; Take an Interview. | Audio samples and feedback criteria suited to both tasks. |
How can you check that audio and other materials will be accessible?
Read the publisher’s terms for the specific edition: downloads, companion website, any app, access period, and required equipment. Try a sample recording when available. Also check whether transcripts are available for review after practice. A link printed in a preview does not show that the service still works today.
For a used copy, ask whether the materials require a code that may already have been activated or a personal account. For an eBook, check whether the files are included and how to access them. Record the answers; if access terms remain unknown, do not count that material as part of what you are buying.
What should a worked solution help you do?
Choose a question from the sample and read its explanation. Can you find the evidence in the text or audio? Do you understand why another answer seems tempting and why it is wrong? For a sentence-building task, look for an explanation of the structure rather than just the final word order.
For Writing and Speaking, a sample shows one possible response; it does not provide feedback on your own work. Check whether the book explains its choices, discusses weaknesses, and offers a way to review your own responses. If your main need is feedback on your spoken delivery, arrange for outside feedback instead of expecting that from a book.
The pitfall
Mistaking a new cover for updated preparation
A year in the title does not prove that the exercises have changed. Compare the actual instructions and response types with the checklist above. If the publisher provides neither a detailed contents page nor a sample, alignment remains unknown. Do not fill that gap with an assumption based on the title’s reputation.
Even an aligned resource may adapt the actual test experience; ETS says this about its own paper-based Practice Test 1. A book can teach the tasks without reproducing the interface or adaptive test. Give it that role, and use a resource that covers the test flow to become familiar with that experience.
How do you choose without accumulating several books?
End your review with three notes: format confirmed or unknown, materials accessible or unknown, explanations useful or insufficient for your needs. Choose one main resource whose chapter you know how to use. Consider page count and number of practice tests only after you have established its main purpose.
If you already own an older book, you can keep some material for general language practice. Label it that way in your study plan; do not treat its results as a current test simulation. A supplementary book should fill a gap—for example, more detailed explanations—instead of duplicating chapters you have not yet worked through.
Key takeaways
- Identify the edition and check its contents instead of relying on the publication year.
- Match the tasks, audio, and explanations to your actual needs.
- Give each resource a clear purpose; a book suited to language practice is not necessarily a simulation of the current test.
