Retake the TOEFL iBT:
when and how to prepare

You can take the TOEFL iBT as many times as you want, but no more than once in a 3-day period. Book when you have identified what needs to improve and planned for your score to arrive before your program’s deadline. First check whether an existing score report or MyBest scores accepted by the program are enough for your application. ETS provides the retake, results, and MyBest rules; the preparation advice is from Upsilar, and the situations are fictional.

What problem should another attempt solve?

Write one sentence that states what you need: meet a section-level requirement, submit an acceptable result by the right date, or strengthen your profile based on the program’s guidance. If your only reason is “I’m disappointed with the number,” review the admission requirements first. A higher score may be desirable without being an additional application requirement.

In a fictional scenario, Nora has the required result but is considering another attempt for reassurance. After confirming that her score report is acceptable, she can weigh the uncertain benefit of another test against the time needed for the other parts of her application.

What should you change before booking?

Separate observations from hypotheses. “Writing is my lowest section” does not necessarily mean “I lack vocabulary.” Review recent responses and look for concrete evidence: a prompt that was not fully addressed, hard-to-understand sentences, limited development, or a rushed ending. For the receptive skills (Reading and Listening), look for recurring errors rather than focusing on one memorable question.

Next, create an action you can evaluate. Before writing an email, practice identifying its recipient and purpose. If your speech often breaks down, listen to your recordings and distinguish hesitation, losing your train of thought, and pronunciation problems. These are possible areas to work on, not an automatic score diagnosis.

After reviewing your work, try a different task. Seeing a change in your performance can help you choose a date; memorizing a repeated exercise tells you less. None of these observations guarantees an increase on the official test.

How often does ETS allow you to retake the test?

The 2026–2027 Bulletin does not limit the number of attempts, but it prohibits taking the TOEFL iBT more than once in a 3-day period. This rule applies even if you canceled scores from an earlier attempt. If you already have an appointment, you cannot book another one within 3 days of it.

This administrative rule is not a recommended preparation schedule. Choose a date based on the work you need to do and the available appointments. Before paying, note the listed price, any travel, and expected delivery fees. Set your budget with the time needed for this session in mind.

How can you leave enough time for your score and its delivery?

Start with what the program requires by its deadline: taking the test, reporting a score, or having the score report received. Ask for clarification if needed. Track the test date, when the score appears in your account, and when the institution receives it separately. A screenshot of your account does not prove receipt.

The Bulletin says scores appear in your ETS account about 3 days after the test. For score reports selected when you take the test, ETS’s institution page gives an example of about 4 to 8 business days for receipt through ETS Data Manager; timing depends on the method used. This estimate does not guarantee the same delivery time for an order placed after the test. A score appearing in your account is not the same as delivery to a school. Do not treat any of these estimates as a guarantee that your application will be complete.

Leave a buffer for unexpected delays and for matching the report to your application. Ask how to confirm receipt. If another test would be too late, check which alternatives are acceptable before paying.

Could MyBest affect your decision?

According to the Bulletin, MyBest combines your highest section scores from valid TOEFL iBT results from the past two years. ETS asks you to check directly with each institution to confirm whether it accepts this combination. Its appearance on a score report does not mean it will count for your application. On a report for a test taken on the new scale, ETS converts any retained older scores; on a report for a test taken on the old scale, MyBest includes only scores from that old scale.

In another fictional scenario, Idriss did better on Reading in one session and Speaking in another. If his program accepts MyBest, he can review the ETS combination before paying for a third test. If the program requires a single test session, he needs to review the results from each date separately. This example assumes no score threshold.

Even with MyBest, maintain all your skills and spend more time on the weakness you identified. Use the block provided by ETS: a combination calculated in your spreadsheet is useful for tracking, but does not replace the required score report.

The pitfall

Booking immediately to erase a bad impression

Leaving the test with a sense of failure can make you want to book another date immediately. Instead, take time to distinguish fatigue, perceived difficulty, and your official result. Book after identifying what you will change: waiting a few days does not, by itself, count as new preparation.

Before confirming, bring together three things: the program requirement, an appropriate study action, and a timeline through receipt of the score report. Clarify what is missing. Retaking the test may be reasonable, but it does not guarantee improvement or admission.

Key takeaways

  • Make the decision based on a program requirement, then identify what needs to change in your preparation.
  • The frequency ETS allows does not determine how much preparation time you need.
  • Plan for the full score-delivery process and check which step must be complete by the deadline.
  • Consider MyBest only after confirming that the program accepts it.
