TOEIC Part 6:
Complete a Passage by Following Its Logic

TOEIC Listening and Reading Part 6 asks you to complete texts by choosing the word, expression, or sentence that fits each blank. The answer must work within the sentence and the overall message. Two Upsilar practice texts and eight questions with worked solutions cover coherence, verb forms, connectors, and sentence insertion.

Why start with the audience and purpose?

A booking email, a construction notice, and a response to a complaint have different purposes. Identify who is writing, to whom, and why. This gives you a framework for understanding the blanks without treating each sentence as a separate exercise.

Look for information that applies across multiple sentences: dates, announced changes, or a request to the reader. A grammatically possible word may contradict that context. A past form does not fit a closure announced for next week unless the passage signals a reference to an earlier event.

For a sentence-insertion question, also read the following sentence. A pronoun or instruction may depend on the information being added. A sentence locating a room may connect an attached map to step-free access; a sentence about a photo sale remains off topic even if it uses vocabulary related to the workshop.

How should you work through the four blanks in each passage?

These fictional Upsilar scenarios also appear in our 200-question bank. If you have already worked through them here, the bank will not be an unfamiliar assessment.

Read each message once in full, then choose your answers. At the end, check that the completed version is coherent. The four choices for each question are designed to isolate a difference in structure or meaning; explain that difference in your review.

The pitfall

Choosing a sentence just because it repeats the topic

A sentence may mention the right workshop but interrupt the email’s flow. Insertion requires more than matching vocabulary: the sentence must provide the expected information at that point without contradicting the rest or leaving a logical gap.

For connectors, mentally replace the English word with its function: cause, result, contrast, or alternative. If that relationship does not fit the ideas, a familiar phrase is still wrong.

Which clue should you keep?

Classify each explanation by level: words around the blank, the whole sentence, or information elsewhere in the document. This shows whether you are missing grammar points or reading too locally. These problems call for different kinds of practice.

Then change one detail in the passage, such as its date or purpose, and see which answer should change. This shows that you understand the role of context instead of memorizing a sequence of answer letters.

Key takeaways

  • Understand the message before filling in the blanks.
  • An inserted sentence must connect what comes before and after.
  • Support your answer with a specific clue from the passage.
